Overview

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is one of the preferred technologies for transferring different types of data at the same time. As it uses a variation of packet switching, that utilises small and fixed packet sizes (unlike TCP/IP), which allows for relatively simple and high-performance switching mechanisms. It is able to provide bandwidth on demand, a quality of service guarantee and promises high broadband speeds. Due to its speed and efficiency (it works across many different types of hardware) it is one of the most common network protocol standards in use today.

Whereas other types of technologies will often not allow for all bandwidth to be used once a function is started, this is not the case with ATM and it therefore makes for a very efficient way to transfer pictures, videos and e-mail, as well as live streaming audio and video.

Frame Relay has many similarities to ATM though uses variable packet sizes as opposed to fixed. This can make it more efficient for transmitting certain types of data, as it doesn't lose any overhead within the packet. It is used to connect Local Area Networks (LAN) whereas ATM only transfers data within a single LAN, and it is also less expensive and easier to upgrade.

and it is not implemented within a single area network contrast to ATM where data transfers are within a single LAN.
