Software-defined Networking (SDN) and Networking Functions Virtualisation (NFV) is a new approach to designing, building and managing networks. Furthermore, a key goal of these enabling technologies is to simplify, optimize, and enhance the network by creating logical networks that are decoupled from the underlying physical hardware, allowing the usage of "off the self" computing platforms and therefore cost savings.

The course outlines the key infrastructure functional blocks, interfaces, practical approaches and design considerations and applicable solutions for SDN and NFV deployment. It focuses on practical considerations - including architecture selection, orchestration, performance, monitoring and security - that may be used to deploy and operate Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and deliver end-to-end services. It provides key practical use cases and Network Transformation strategies for Operator and Service Provider environments, and provides a detailed analysis of multiple examples of real world SDN & NFV deployment examples.

Finally, the course will provide a hands-on utilising a number of the key SDN & NFV components discussed during the week, including: Hypervisors, Network Virtualisation, Containers, SDN Controllers; and a variety of south-bound interfaces for Operator environments focusing on NETCONF/YANG, blende with other South-bound Interfaces including: OVSDB and OpenFlow.
