In order to build and troubleshoot an IPTV service, designers and engineers must return to the fundaments of television and appreciate how services are encoded and delivered. IPTV Head-ends generally provide services from satellite delivered channels over DVB-T. Some services, Such as BT-Vision use Digital Video Broadcast technology to deliver some channels over DVB-T. IPTV will generally use protocols described in DVB-IPI.

This course will provide an understanding of how Analogue television evolved into Digital Video Broadcast (DVB). It will describe the structure of DVB transmissions and provide attendees with the opportunity to analyze streams with a transport stream analyzer.

Bandwidth is always a problem for TV distribution as it is the key element affecting the price of providing service. The course will explain in detail how different encoding methods are used to deliver higher quality services.

Delegates on this course will complete 'Hands On' sessions which will enable them to design and troubleshoot Digital TV and IPTV services.


Upon completion candidates will be able to:

  • Appreciate how DVB services through satellite, terrestrial and IP use common transport formats
  • Analyze Transport streams to troubleshoot problems
  • Encode content both live and re-coded into MPEG-2 and H.246 formats
  • Appreciate how MPEG-2  MPEG-4 Part 10 and H.264 encoding works
  • Transcode Terrestrial and Satellite transport streams and stream out over multicast IPTV services
