View course dates

Course Duration: 4 days

Course Code: PDN091

Course Description:

This course will provide a practical hands-on grounding of how SNMP works, how it can be used and how to deploy Management Information Bases to meet the needs of your organization.

Communications networks based upon IP, comprising routers, servers and client based PCs are now widely used. They may carry data, Internet services, Industrial production equipment, environmental monitoring, telemetry, telecommunications or Television. In all cases reliability of such networks depends upon correct configuration and operation. Failure of hardware components, software services or incorrect configuration can cause such services to operate below their designed performance or even fail completely. Reliable services depend upon good management of the network and its components.

Simple Network Management Protocol is now widely used to configure and manage professional network services. This may be as simple as the reading of domestic elecricisy metwrs by remote control or as complex as configuring a satellite TV network service. Successful deployment depends upon a good understanding of how the protocol functions, how it can be used to manage devices that include the standard Management Information Base (MIP-2) and how to extend management to included newer extended bases both standard and proprietary.

On completion of this course delegates will be able to:

- Know the principles of network management
- Appreciate how a management station and managed device use SNMP
- Understand the vital part played by Management Information Bases (MIBs)
- Use SNMP to chnange the cofiguration of network equipment
- Manage routers and switches with SNMP
- Deploy proprietary MIBs
- Manage PCs and Workstations
- Appreciate how MIBs can be expanded to enable management of all devices
