Course Duration: 1 day

Course Code: PWL028

Course Description:

The next generation of telecommunications networks will deliver broadband data and multimedia services to users over a core that supports IP over MPLS. In order to achieve the migration to this future IP only service, existing Signalling Systems must be made to interoperate with new control mechanisms. When the existing circuit switched infrastructure disappears so too will the service paths that support the signalling network.  It will become necessary to carry existing SS7 interconnections over the new IP infrastructure and to interoperate new packet based telecommunications and voice services with existing international circuit switched telecommunications.

Transition to the new services has already started in the UK and the current plans expect a complete migration, replacing all existing ISDN local exchanges by 2010. It therefore will become vital to carry exiting SS7 interconnections over the new converged IP infrastructure and to interoperate mobile and fixed international networks using SS7 with new VoIP infrastructures.  The first step in this transition requires the carriage of SS7 over IP.

This course provides an understanding of how can be achieved, the protocol architectures used and an overview of the implementation aspects of such developments. It will provide an understanding for implementers, designers, managers and infrastructure engineers that need to plan, implement and use the new generation of networks and services.

When you have completed this course you will be able to:

Describe the basic protocol architecture needed to carry SS7 over IP
Select the appropriate options and mechanisms development of new signalling services
Compare services provided by TCP, UDP and IP with SS7 Message Transfer Part
Build infrastructures using SCTP to carry SS7 over IP effectively
Provide reliability by deploying the re-routing options in the event of failures
Deliver Intelligent network services over IP
Carry TCAP, ISUP and Q.931 ISDN Access Signalling over IP
