View course dates

Course Duration: 3 Days

Course Code: PDN081

Course Description:

The first day of this seminar is devoted to the basics of ATM and how it relates to the particular tasks of ASIC design. The first day also includes a discussion of how ATM applications make use of ATM technology and its capabilities, in order to provide some perspective for the days to follow. Day two concentrates on the physical layers of ATM, describing the part SDH has to play in the support of ATM networks and the relationship between ATM and SDH. This day includes an overview of SDH as it relates to ATM. Day three focuses on quality of service and the mechanisms available within ATM for delivering QoS. We then consider some implementation scenarios to discuss how ATM is being provided to customers and leave time at the end of the third day for a discussion of any issues the seminar has raised with respect to producing an ATM chipset.

Prerequisites:

This course assumes that delegates have a solid grasp of data communications basics. This course is aimed at those from both technical and non technical backgrounds who require an in depth overview of ATM technology, its place in today's infrastructure and its applications.

This course includes the following modules:

Just what is ATM and why is it such a good idea?

  • The main characteristics of ATM technology
  • What does an ATM network look like?
  • The advantages of the ATM approach
  • How does ATM achieve it's seemingly impossible goals
  • Comparing ATM with competing technologies

ATM Connections

  • Multiplexing connections together virtual channels and virtual paths
  • Permanent and on-demand connections
