Course outline for UTRAN Long Term Evolution Technical OverviewUTRAN Long Term Evolution Technical Overview

View course dates

Course Duration: 1 day

Course Code: PWS128

Course Description:

This course provides a technical overview of the 3GPP R8 specifications and proposals for the Long Term Evolution of the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network. Several deployment scenarios are presented, including inter-LTE, intra-LTE and Inter-RAT architecture options and connectivity to evolved and non-evolved Core Networks. Physical layer features and principles that are new to the UTRAN, such as OFDMA and SC-FDMA, are presented in detail and the impacts of these, such as Resource Allocation discussed. Additionally, the course provides information on existing principles and procedures that are enhanced or modified to function in the e-UTRAN. A section on the All IP Core Network evolution is also included with respect to LTE.

Objectives:
- To provide a technical overview of the 3GPP R8 LTE architecture and features and deployment options
- To describe in the protocol architecture and protocol entities currently being specified to support LTE
- To present a description of the key Physical layer principles, characteristics and parameters in both the Downlink and Uplink
- To outline key mobility and interworking issues
- To discuss Layer 1-2 interactions and procedures
- To outline the evolution of RRC in the LTE specifications
- To introduce the System Architecture Evolution as it relates to LTE

Following this course the delegates will have a more detailed understanding of how the 3GPP UTRAN is evolving in the mid and long term to a new and more simplified network architecture and the implications of this to service provision. The delegates will also have a technical insight into the complexities and challenges associated with the new Radio Access and Multiplexing mechanisms , namely OFDMA and SC-FDMA, and the key Resource Allocation principles that are currently being developed.

Prerequisites:

A general understanding of current 3GPP UMTS RAN Architecture, Resource Allocation and Physical Layer Principles.
