Course Duration: 2 days

Course Code: PWS160

Course Description:

Television has become a technology and medium that has had a major impact on our lives. However, normally we expect to watch TV when at home, i.e. when static on a mains-powerd TV. However, customer surveys and tests have indicated that there is a considerable demand for TV that can be viewed when people are away from home, taking their TV screen with them. As soon a technology becomes mobile, there are a number of wireless problems to be addressed: handover between base stations, power capabilities of the mobile unit; battery capacity versus size, screen resolution, etc.

These are two opposing strategies for delivering TV services to mobile consumers and this 2-day course explores these two approaches:

-  MBMS  Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service
-  DVB-H The Handheld version of Digital Video Broadcasting

MBMS is a unidirectional point to multipoint bearer that runs over UMTS networks (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service or 3G) mobile terminals.  With most 3G networks in Europe being very under used and with much spare capacity, carrying TV programming is an appealing financial prospect for 3G operators.

DVB-H is the mobile version of the already successfully deployed DVB-T (terrestrial) service, for example in the UK this is Freeview. DVB-H uses a dedicated network and radio frequency.

This course explains each of these and brings out the relative positions of each in the marketplace.
