Course Description:


This course is designed for IT support staff who will be using MOM 2005 to monitor server health, process alerts, and diagnose and resolve problems.

 

The course is written for IT support professionals who currently support Microsoft servers, such as Active Directory domain controllers, or Exchange servers, and will now use MOM as a management tool to monitor server health, process alerts, and diagnose and resolve problems. It may also be of interest to non technical support staff to gain an overview of the MOM product and see how it can be used in their environment.

 

The course will be delivered as an interactive lecture including many hands-on exercises, which guide the students through the alert resolution process and the Operators Console.

 

On completion, delegates will be able to:

 

- Understand MOM termninology, and how the different components fit together
- Understand how the System Center Data Warehouse is used in reporting
- Understand how management packs work
- Differentiate between the different MOM management consoles
- Understand the restrictions of the MOM security model
- Understand the different health states MOM uses
- Drill down through the diagram and state views to diagnose the cause of service failure
- Customise the Operators console
- Use MOM tasks to diagnose and repair faults
- Make use of product knowledge to fix faults
- Maintain the knowledge base by updating it upon fix

 


Prerequisites:

Previous experience in supporting Windows server systems, using the Event logs, and the performance console is expected. It is not suitable for the MOM Architects, or staff resonsible for the day to day maintenance of MOM itself. They would be better suited by attending the MS2287 and QAMOM05ADM, Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 - Advanced Administration.

  • Management groups, management servers, managed computers, and management packs - definitions of MOM components
  • How MOM components fit together
  • The different MOM consoles
  • MOM security restrictions.

Monitoring Servers with MOM

  • How MOM evaluates server health.
  • Meanings of the different health states.
  • State and Diagram views.
  • Performance monitoring.
  • How MOM heatbeating actually works.
  • Customising the Operators console.

Diagnosing and Resolving alerts with MOM

  • Alerts and events.
  • MOM notifications.
  • Maintaining the MOM knowledge base.
  • Using MOM tasks for diagnostics and to resolve problems.

MOM Reporting

  • How the System Center Data Warehouse is populated.
  • Running standard MOM reports.
