Course Description:

This course is designed to give new entrants to the satellite communications industry a basic overview of the main principles, components and protocols that make up satellite communications.

Prerequisites:

As a new entrant course there are no prerequisites. It is helpful however if delegates have a basic understanding of networking principles as the course is although aimed at an overview level, is technical.

This course includes the following modules:

Day 1

• 09:00 Introductions
• 09:15 Why Satellite.
• 09:30 Overview of components making a satellite connection
• 10:00 Antenna (basics)
• 10:45 Coffee break
• 11:00 Antenna (feed designs etc), (frequencies), (mechanical considerations), (tracking, de-ice)
• 12:00 OMT, LNA, LNB, Field measurements
• 13:00 Lunch
• 14:00 Cable (IFL) installations, types, problems
• 14:30 The Satellite Modem (including visual demonstration)
• 15:15 Coffee break
• 15:30 Satellite Modem Options (common usage)
• 16:30 Examples of Satellite links
• 17:00 Questions

Day 2

• 09:00 Overview of day 1
• 09:15 Examples of satellite links, (including visual demonstration)
• 10:00 Upconvertors, PA's etc, (including visual demonstration)
• 10:30 Coffee break
• 11:00 IF and SHF paths in satellite system (Uplink power calculations), (field measurements)
• 12:30 Satellite link/earth station problem solving
• 13:00 Lunch
• 14:00 The Data interface (available types and usage etc)
• 14:45 User interfaces and systems connectivity (clocking issues etc)
• 15:15 Coffee break
• 15:30 Network management sub-systems (VSat)
• 16:00 COTS - v - Bespoke
• 16:30 Satellite operators requirements
• 17:00 Questions
