The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) credential is the premier certification for professionals who analyze the business requirements and design and implement the infrastructure for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform and Microsoft Windows Server System. Implementation responsibilities include installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network systems.

 

The MCSE certification is appropriate for:

The MCSE credential is one of the most widely recognized technical certifications in the industry. By earning the premier MCSE credential, individuals are demonstrating that they have the skills necessary to lead organizations in the successful design, implementation, and administration of the most advanced Windows operating system and Microsoft Windows Server System.

 

The Typical Computing Environment of an MSCE 

 

The Windows 2000 track of the MCSE credential is designed for information technology (IT) professionals working in the typically complex computing environment of medium to large organizations.

An MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a network operating system in environments with the following characteristics:

 

  • 200 to 26,000 supported users
  • Five to 150 physical locations
  • Typical network services and applications including file and print, database, messaging, proxy server or firewall, dial-in server, desktop management, and Web hosting
  • Connectivity needs including connecting individual offices and users at remote locations to the corporate network and connecting corporate networks to the Internet

 

In addition, an MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience in the following areas:

 

  • Implementing and administering a desktop operating system
  • Designing a network infrastructure

 

 

How to Earn Your MCSE: on Microsoft Windows 2000 certification

 

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) candidates on the Microsoft Windows 2000 track are required to pass seven exams or the equivalent that include the following:

 

Core exams (five exams required)

Three networking system exams (70-215, 70-216, & 70-217)

One client operating system exam (70-620, 70-270, or 70-210)

One design exam - Candidates must pass one exam that provides proof of expertise for design skills for specific Microsoft server technologies. (70-219, 70-220, 70-221, 70-226, 70-297 or 70-298)

 

Elective exams (one exam required)
The elective exams provide a valid and reliable measure of technical proficiency and expertise in solution design and implementation.  (One exam from: 70-089, 70-214, 70-218, 70-219, 70-220, 70-221, 70-222, 70-223, 70-224, 70-225, 70-226, 70-227, 70-228, 70-229, 70-230, 70-232, 70-234, 70-235, 70-236, 70-244, 70-262, 70-281, 70-282, 70-284, 70-285, 70-297, 70-298, 70-299, 70-301, 70-350, 70-431, 70-445, 70-500, 70-501, 70-620, 70-624, 70-630, 70-631)

 

MCSE candidates should also have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a network operating system, implementing and administering a client operating system, and designing a network infrastructure.

 

Individuals who earned the MCSE certification on Windows NT 4.0 by February 28, 2001, remain certified.

 

Note Microsoft has developed independent certification requirements for Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

 

Note As an alternative to the electives that are listed, these third-party certifications may be substituted for an MCSE elective:
