The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) credential is the premier certification for professionals who analyze the business requirements and design and implement the infrastructure for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform and Microsoft Windows Server System. Implementation responsibilities include installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network systems.

The MCSE certification is appropriate for:

The MCSE credential is one of the most widely recognized technical certifications in the industry. By earning the premier MCSE credential, individuals are demonstrating that they have the skills necessary to lead organizations in the successful design, implementation, and administration of the most advanced Windows operating system and Microsoft Windows Server System.

The Typical Computing Environment of an MSCE

The Windows 2000 track of the MCSE credential is designed for information technology (IT) professionals working in the typically complex computing environment of medium to large organizations.

An MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a network operating system in environments with the following characteristics:

200 to 26,000 supported users
Five to 150 physical locations
Typical network services and applications including file and print, database, messaging, proxy server or firewall, dial-in server, desktop management, and Web hosting
Connectivity needs including connecting individual offices and users at remote locations to the corporate network and connecting corporate networks to the Internet

In addition, an MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience in the following areas:

Implementing and administering a desktop operating system
Designing a network infrastructure

How to Earn Your MCSE: on Windows Server 2003 certification

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) candidates on the Windows Server 2003 track are required to satisfy the following requirements:

Core exams (six exams required)

Four networking system exams (70-290, 70-291, 70-293, & 70-294)

One client operating system exam (70-620, 70-270, or 70-210)

One design exam (70-297 or 70-298)

Elective exams (one exam required)
Together with the core exams, the elective exams provide a valid and reliable measure of technical proficiency and expertise in solution design and implementation. (One exam from: 70-089, 70-227, 70-228, 70-229, 70-235, 70-236, 70-262, 70-281, 70-282, 70-284, 70-285, 70-297, 70-298, 70-299, 70-301, 70-350, 70-431, 70-445, 70-500, 70-501, 70-620, 70-624, 70-630, or 70-631)

MCSE candidates should also have at least one year of experience implementing and administering network operating systems and desktop operating systems.

Upgrade exams (two exams required)
Microsoft has designed an upgrade path that will enable a current MCSE to earn the Windows Server 2003 credential in a time-effective and cost-effective manner. (Exams: 70-292 & 70-296)

Note As an alternative to the electives that are listed, these Microsoft certifications may be substituted for an MCSE elective:

- MCSA on Microsoft Windows 2000

- MCSE on Microsoft Windows 2000

- MCSE on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
